My Photo Of The Day – The Copenhagen ‘Love Locks’ on the Bryggebroen (Nyhavn Canal Bridge).

The Love Locks or Padlocks are symbols of devotion for lovebirds. These padlocks draw huge attention to tourists at Nyhavn in Copenhagen, Denmark. Couples put away padlocks on this bridge to signify a testament and proof of their love and loyalty to their relationships.

It is a tradition for lovers especially young lovers to deposit their love lines and vows on these padlocks. They write their names or initials on a padlock and tie them to the bridge. The keys are thrown into the canal thereby sealing their love forever.

Wow! This is seen as a prayer and the couples believe it will ensure an unbreakable bond between them.

Peace and Love!

  1. I saw this on some footbridges in and around Washington DC but not the quantity of locks in your pictures. I wondered why they had been put there and thought maybe it was a favoured suicide spot but that seemed unlikely. I think this is a much more plausible and lovely explanation! Thanks for posting.

    • This Love Locks are in major cities in Europe. Paris is a city known for the enormous Love locks in Pont des Arts where lovebirds the world over who visit Paris lock up their love vows on the bridge, then toss the key into the River Seine.

Now, the bridge is under threat of an imminent collapse hence the recent move to evacuate the heavy padlocks from the bridge.

So, I believe the ones in Washington DC serve a similar purpose too. Talk about Love! 🙂
