The Law Of 1%

It is said that one of the biggest causes of unhappiness is when the gap between who you are and who you are meant to be is huge and there is no plan in place to close in on it.

The larger that gap, the unhappier you are.
The smaller the gap, the happier you are.

This gap should never be closed really, because we should always strive to be more, do more, the process in itself is the goal.

There are always more lives to touch, more books to write, more love to share, more places to visit, more languages to learn and more opportunities to grow.

So the idea is not to close the gap but to reduce it, continuously close in on it as much as possible.

Please don’t confuse motion with growth.

Moving on is not moving forward, just because you are “occupied” does not mean you are moving forward, it does not make you productive, it does not mean you are growing, it just means you are expending energy on something that may or not be taking you closer to your evolved self which leads to frustration because you end up tired and yet feel unaccomplished.

E.g spending 10 hours on Social Media vs reading the book you bought 5 years ago.

Growth requires energy, is your energy being misplaced? If it is, growth will be stagnant.

Daily you are either closing the gap or expanding it
You are either adding to your life or removing from it
It is either +1 or -1
If you do both +1-1 you get 0

To be happy, to feel fulfilled, you need to work on “continuously” closing the gap between your present self and your evolved self, happiness comes when you are “working” towards your evolved self and not against.

When your +1 outweighs your -1

There is a wave of happiness you experience when you go to bed a little wiser than when you woke up. And a wave of sadness comes upon you when you feel you are wasting time and energy without growing.

So what are you going to do today, right now to improve your life by 1%?
What one thing can you learn about yourself, from your experiences, from your relationships that can improve your life by 1%?
What can you do right now, in this moment that will improve your own life by 1%?

Well go ahead and +1 yourself into a better version of your yesterday.

  1. Hi. That’s a really helpful post. I end up feeling worthless no matter how much I work towards it. My problem is that even though I expend energy on meaningful things, I attach my success at someone else’s commendation or approval and then I feel worthless again. I would love to know your thoughts on seeking other’s approval. May be in some other post? I really liked your style of writing 🙂
