A Break From My Comfort Zone:
Growing up, I enjoyed the company of my siblings, family and friends that I wondered how life would be without them. I never imagined I could live apart from my family. What? To stay away from my precious mother, her food or my wonderful and loving siblings? No way!
As I journeyed through life, I realised that as kids, we are drawn to family so much that the thought of staying miles away from them is heart breaking.
However, during my teenage years, I watched a lot of foreign movies which usually left me fantasizing if it was ‘film tricks’ or if in actual fact, some of the depicted sceneries and buildings, roads were exact even in real life. Needless to say, that the desire and cravings to travel abroad someday became a subtle nudge in my sub-conscious. By the time I finished university, I was fully aware of how the outside world looked like judging from the pages of books and movies. This increased my admiration and zeal to travel out of Nigeria.
I knew someday I would travel abroad so that I could have a first-hand experience of the things I saw on Television.
Fast forward to 2016, and I no longer share those sentiments of how life would turn out if I left family or friends. I have grown to conclude that living my comfort zone was the best decision of my life. I have no regrets whatsoever in taking that bold step. It was a step to self-discovery. A journey into the unknown, where the things I had read and seen in movies became facts which I could relate with.
The fear of fear hold people back from forging ahead and taking giant strides into the unknown. Fear inhibits people from finding their own voices. From making a change to their situations; From fulfilling their dreams and living their goals.
Travelling has given me an experience of a life time. Europe in general is a mix of multi-nationals, Expats; a plethora of people. A hub of cultures. And connecting with these cosmopolitan societies has been a very rewarding adventure.
Finally, I believe that insight into other cultures, getting to meet people with different life stories gave me a better understanding of their plights and this is my best way to acquire empathy.
Peace and Love!
